My candle burns at both ends

A friend's favourite

    My candle burns at both ends;
    It will not last the night;
    But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends -
    It gives a lovely light!

Edna St. Vincent Millay ("First Fig", A Few Figs From Thistles, 1920)

Sorry, Could not follow what this poem is trying to convey? Is is about the philosophy of enjoying present to the fullest as if there is no tomorrow :-)

My interpretation...is that it's about... being selfless and beyond to the extent that you..may burn yourself but for other's happiness...

Reminds me of a hindi song...

Suraj na ban paye tho,
Jaltha deepak bantha chal,
Phool mile ya angare,
Sach ki raho pe chalta chal..
Sach ki raho pe chalta chal..

I like your interpretation better. This is such a deep meaning poem then. Thank you for en lighting me with such a thought provoking image of selfless love compared to a burning candle on both ends.
